Ah country music is fickle mistress. At one point is sucked and belonged to redneck racists. Then outlaw country came along with it's heroes of the people like Willie Nelson and Johnny Cash. Then they lost their influence (thought they still rocked) and then country music was then ruled by people like Garth Brookes. It sucked again. Then Rick Rubin produced the new Dixie Chicks album and Johnny Cashes. Suddenly it was awesome once more. So where do the Evangenitals sit in all this?
Thankfully they seem to pushing country music in the good direction. The opening track "Hello" is brilliant. Its lyrics are sublime and Juli Crockett's vocals are a thing of beauty. Henry Bermudez's (as the listener will find out after listening to the album) is a superb guitarist and this track exemplifies his country licks brilliantly. "Hard Luck Song" is a song about love and loss and is also excellent. It will provide a soundtrack to all of the heartbroken lovers out there. "Work Song "however is blow to the quality of the EP. Its lyrics are awful and the music is just as bad. The
song has no redeeming qualities. "Home" features the best vocals on the album. It was refreshing to hear after the disappointing previous track. It is much more of a traditional country song but have no doubt it is still pretty good.
"So Sweet" is a heartbreaking song. Juli Crockett's vocals convey the emotion of the song perfectly and if you don't share a tear to this then you're already dead. "Bad Town" is a bluegrass track and fails completely. It's not convincing and when she sings about how it's a "Bad town" you can't help but feel rusted by the terribly clichéd lyrics. However the music sort of save the song as the instruments are played brilliantly. "I'm Sad" is track of a certain ‘mediocre' quality, it can only be described as boring.
Overall the songs about heartache are excellent and seem genuine. It's just songs about fighting don't seem too convincing and in fact feel inorganic. However the good tracks (especially the brilliant opening track "Hello") feel like instant country classics. Even if you aren't a country fan this EP will still provide for an entertaining listen.
