The Crux

Funk music by The Crux from Australia since Febuary 2006. Currently without a record label.

The Crux are at the forefront of the new vibe in Fremantle with grooves and licks that kick with a stamp of authenticity. Sounding like the future and the past at the same time, in a way going back to where the Meters left off. The Crux is a three piece funk band going deep into the sound and feel of the music from New Orlean’s. The band takes a street party atmosphere and converts to the stage in a sound that is free, open and very very danceable. You could just about displace your hipbone dancing.

While common wisdom suggests that a musical trio is, by definition, subject to certain limitations, The Crux proves to be no place for common wisdom. The three members manage a careful balance of vocals, guitar, bass, sax and drums that sound like the work of a half-dozen players. An unholy trinity that gets you down to the nitty gritty playing grooves so infectious they make you itch all over.

All the individual members make up a superb collage of funk, but each are stand alone, "blow your socks off" players that seem too effortlessly churn out funk laced licks with a controlled abandon. Alex Borthwick plays a baritone guitar, covering the bass and guitar parts simultaneously, freeing up the rhythm section for big open jams and tight grooves. Drums and lead vocals are performed by Michael Boase, aka, Mr Gritty, while Damian Drac Denyer blows a baritone saxaphone with huge intensity covering horn parts, solo’s and general heavy funky riffing, fat tones and deep roots.

The Crux don't play funk- they personify it! Their music savvy matches the level of their stage show - all dress and act like they are meant to be there.Syncopation & tonality bounce off your eardrums constantly. They look like a wet-behind-the-ears group of youngsters, but have erupted with a deep-grooving brand of muscular, economic, syncopated funky-funk that hits the ear with almost bewildering impact.

The Crux has built and is still building a reputation as one of Perths most happening funk bands based members who together, work in such a tight unique way that the band needs to be seen to be believed. So get some spit and polish, clean those shoes so you can groove. And remember three's a crowd....
