Alternative music by Bruce Unger from West Cork (N/A). Currently without a record label.
Bruce is singer/songwriter in a folk/country vein, reminiscent of John Prine, Townes Van Zandt and Lyle Lovett. His songs feature clever, if slightly dark dark lyrics which are complemented by his rich voice and beautiful guitar work.
Biography Bruce has called many places home, including Canada, the UK and Ireland, but is now permanently resident in West Cork, where people look at you kind of funny if you can't play at least three instruments.
He started his performing days as frontman for the Avant Gardeners in Vancouver, Canada, where he attempted to bring melody into a chaos of sound, but eventually gave up and instead astounded audiences with his virtuousity on a specially built electric chair.
Bruce has toned it down a notch since the heady days of the Gardeners, and now writes and performs in a trippy, folk/country vein. Comparisons have been made with the Buffalo Springfield and his tunes have been described as “bringing to mind the wry songs of Lyle Lovett…”
Unger’s rich voice and heartfelt vocals “suggest the intensity of Pearl Jam’s Eddie Vedder” according to a recent review of his newly released debut album, aptly titled “Blow i n” (which applies to anyone who wasn’t born and raised within 10 miles of his sleepy West Cork village).
The songs on Bruce’s debut album have been described as “multidimensional nuggets, with clever and slightly dark lyrics, beautiful guitar work and instrumentation” (ExMogul Music)
Derek Sivers (founder of CD Baby) says "if David Bowie was a singer/songwriter he'd sound like Bruce!"
Combining Nick Cave with Buffalo Springfield, Bruce Unger has created an original if sometimes weak album.
We begin with "Crooked Willow Tree". Combining Neil Young style guitar work with country vocals; it sounds like the best song Buffalo Spring...Read the review here
